Siglo: a Parisian terrace facing Parliament
A roof above Spring Street
Opened in 2007 above the Melbourne Supper Club, Siglo is reached via a timber staircase that leads to a cube of steel, glass and neon, then out onto a broad open-air terrace. The decor borrows from Parisian cafés: woven rattan chairs, garden benches, tables dressed in white. From the parapet, the view takes in the columned façade of the Parliament of Victoria, the spire of St Patrick's Cathedral and the domes of the Princess Theatre, beneath the canopy of the Spring Street trees. Outdoor heaters mean it can be enjoyed on cool evenings too.
Classic cocktails and cigars
No showy creations here: the menu focuses on the great classics, quality spirits served as long drinks, aperitifs and champagne, with a short wine selection drawn from the Supper Club's cellars. Siglo is also one of the few bars in the city centre to offer Havana cigars, served at the table from the humidor, to pair with a single malt or a cognac. A few snacks accompany the drinks. The venue draws local office workers after work, then audiences from the nearby theatres and night owls.
Practical information
Open Tuesday to Saturday, from 5pm to 3am. No bookings and no time limit, with table service; the venue is better suited to small groups, and the door policy has a reputation for being strict. Smart dress required. The terrace can be hired privately during the day and on Sunday evenings. Getting there: Parliament station right next door; City Circle trams on Spring Street and routes 86 or 96 on Bourke Street, within the Free Tram Zone.
