Bomba: tapas and cocktails on a rooftop in central Melbourne
A perched bar above a Spanish venue
Opened in 2013 on Lonsdale Street, in the East End, Bomba operates on two levels: a dark, lively tapas restaurant on the ground floor, and a bar set up on the roof, five floors higher, which you reach by lift. Renovated in 2018, the space is split between the original terrace facing Lonsdale Street, topped with a retractable roof and sliding windows, and a covered, glazed section looking towards Chinatown and the south of the city. Hanging baskets, timber and warm lighting give the place the feel of a patio, at the foot of the CBD towers.
Vermouth, sherry and house cocktails
The menu draws heavily on Spain: vermouths by the glass, sherries of every style, Spanish wines and sangria. Signature cocktails range from A$17 to A$25, such as the Verdita Margarita with jalapeño or the Durazno with reposado tequila and amontillado. On the food side, tapas to share. On Mondays from 5pm, every drink ordered on the rooftop comes with a free tapa; on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm, a pre-theatre menu of six tapas at A$49 is offered, without booking. DJs liven up Friday and Saturday nights.
Practical information
The rooftop bar opens on Mondays from 5pm, Tuesday to Friday from 3pm, Saturdays from 1pm and Sundays from 3pm, each time until late. Online bookings are possible, with walk-ins accepted subject to space; the rooftop can be hired privately for 30 to 110 people. A retractable roof and heating mean you can head up in cool weather. Getting there: Parliament station a few minutes' walk away; Bourke Street trams (routes 86 and 96) one block south, within the city centre's Free Tram Zone.
