On República de Guatemala street, just behind the cathedral, the Círculo Mexicano occupies a restored 19th-century building, whose ground floor houses a patio lined with shops by Mexican designers. Lifts at the back of the courtyard lead to the roof. On stepping out, the view is immediately striking: the domes, bell towers and buttresses of the Catedral Metropolitana rise a few dozen metres away, with the Palacio Nacional, the Templo Mayor area and the silhouette of the Torre Latinoamericana further off.

Pool, stoves and seasonal cuisine

The terrace, paved with herringbone brick and softened by flowering hedges, is arranged around a small rectangular pool, wood and rope lounge seating and a glazed pergola. The restaurant Comedor Mexicano offers seasonal Mexican cuisine that travels from one state to another, with a fondness for seafood and corn, dishes cooked on the comal and plates to share. At the bar, artisanal mezcals, organic wines, fresh fruit waters and house cocktails accompany the sunset over the stones of the cathedral.

A peaceful spot above the bustle

Far from the hustle of the streets of the centre, the place attracts hotel guests and locals coming for a quiet lunch alike. The terrace can be booked privately for cocktail parties, meetings, birthdays or private dinners.

Restaurant open every day from 11am, until 10pm from Sunday to Wednesday and 11pm from Thursday to Saturday. Booking recommended on +52 55 9689 0543, especially for a table facing the cathedral. The street is pedestrianised: expect to finish the journey on foot. Zócalo/Tenochtitlan metro station (line 2) about five minutes away.
