DÍON: the panoramic restaurant of Central Plaza
At the top of the former Central Bank
Between Temple Bar and College Green, the Brutalist tower of the former Central Bank of Ireland, built in the 1970s, has taken the name Central Plaza. Its structure is unusual: the floors are suspended from the roof by steel tie rods. Restored and open to the public, it houses DÍON at its summit, on the two highest levels. You arrive through the bar on the 9th floor, then a grand staircase leads to the dining room on the 10th, topped by a glass roof.
Everything is enclosed and air-conditioned, with no terrace, but the windows run all the way round the room. Before your eyes: Trinity College, the Liffey and the Ha'penny Bridge, the Convention Centre, the Poolbeg chimneys, the Aviva Stadium and, on clear days, Dún Laoghaire harbour and the mountains to the south.
Irish grill and compass cocktails
Selected by the Michelin Guide, the cooking takes a chic brasserie approach built around Irish produce and a grill: Carlingford oysters at €21 for half a dozen, sirloin at €47, aged rib-eye at €49. Each cocktail bears a compass bearing pointing towards the place in Dublin that inspired it; the signature creations cost €15 to €19, the alcohol-free versions €12.
