Chicago Roof: an urban garden facing the skyline
On the roof of the Gekko House
The Gekko House is an industrial-style hotel on Mainzer Landstraße, one of the main thoroughfares of the Gallus district, about ten minutes' walk from the central station. On the ground floor, the Chicago Williams restaurant serves its grills all year round; at the very top, on the 7th floor, the roof turns in the fine season into an urban garden open to hotel guests and to locals and visitors alike.
Parasols, plants, armchairs and fabric banquettes make up a relaxed terrace setting, with the towers of the banking district as a backdrop. The most pleasant moment remains the late afternoon, when the sun goes down over the city.
Spritz and no-fuss cocktails
The speciality is the Chicago Spritz, served on tap, at €12 like the Aperol or limoncello spritz. House cocktails, such as the French 069 or the orange Paloma, cost €13, and €15 for the Elderflower Negroni. The menu also includes classics, beer, wines by the glass and a few bottles of rosé and champagne. Note that the bill cannot be split.
Practical information
The roof opens from late spring to early autumn, every day from 5pm to 10pm, in fine weather only; it closes in the event of rain and during the winter. No reservations: first come, first served. Relaxed dress. Questions can be sent by messaging or by email to the restaurant. The central station (Hauptbahnhof) is about ten minutes' walk away; several tram lines serve Mainzer Landstraße.
