Tchanqué: the spirit of the Bassin d'Arcachon above the Chartrons

A rooftop at the top of the Hotel Indigo

On the parvis des Chartrons, the former Mercure hotel at the Cité Mondiale became the Hotel Indigo Bordeaux Centre Chartrons in 2023. Its top floor, the seventh, is home to Tchanqué, a bar-restaurant of around 700 m² split between indoor rooms and a terrace. Its name refers to the oyster farmers' huts on stilts in the Bassin d'Arcachon, and designer Stella Cadente has dreamed up a beach-house decor: zingy colours, woven pendant lights, rattan armchairs and wooden pergolas.

The Garonne and the rooftops of Bordeaux

From the terrace, the eye sweeps over the Garonne and its quays, the arches of the Pont de Pierre in the distance, and the slate and tiled roofs of the Chartrons district. Inside, wide picture windows keep the view when the weather turns. The venue is lively from morning to night: coffee to start the day, lunch, a sunset aperitif and then dinner.

Oysters, ember-cooked dishes and regional produce

The menu showcases regional produce, sourced from market gardeners, fishmongers and oyster sellers. Start with oysters from the Bassin (€13 for six) or tapas to share, such as Iberian ham croquetas or baby squid in persillade, before a dish cooked in the charcoal oven: octopus tentacles, mullet fillet, beef hanger steak or Aubrac rib-eye. For dessert, gâteau basque and creamy canelés. On Saturday lunchtimes, “La cabane du Tchanqué” replaces the usual menu with seafood, an oyster bar and terrines, and Sundays are dedicated to brunch. Cocktails, Bordeaux wines and champagne accompany the aperitif.

The rooftop can be hired privately for receptions and events.
