Maya Mexican: Mexico on the 11th floor, on Ann Street

A stone oasis above the Valley

At 757 Ann Street, a short walk from Fortitude Valley station, the lift goes up to the 11th floor, to the roof that was once home to the Eleven Rooftop Bar. Maya has set up a Mexican restaurant and bar there. The decor plays on white, stone, marble and timber, with cacti, olive trees and lush greenery. You can sit at the bar facing the city, in the large courtyard lounges or in more intimate semicircular booths, with the skyscrapers of central Brisbane as a backdrop. Canopies and retractable roofs offer protection from the sun as well as the rain.

Regional Mexican cuisine and agave spirits

The menu reworks Mexican street food and the traditions of Yucatán and Oaxaca with Queensland produce: tacos, ceviches, guacamole, sharing dishes and group menus. As for drinks, house margaritas, signature cocktails, fresh fruit waters with or without alcohol, and a selection of artisanal tequilas, mezcals and sotols; the alcohol-free list is carefully put together. On weekdays, lunch and late-afternoon deals liven up the rooftop, and DJs take their place during evenings and events.

Practical information

Open from Wednesday to Sunday, from noon and until late at weekends. Online bookings for up to 16 people, in two-hour slots; drinks-only bookings start late in the evening. Walk-ins accepted subject to availability and the weather. No air conditioning, but fans. Smart dress: no thongs, singlets, sportswear or caps; a stricter code after 9pm. Fortitude Valley station is about five minutes' walk away.
