An open-air bar on Avenida Alvear

On Avenida Alvear, a few blocks from Recoleta Cemetery, the Alvear Palace Hotel devotes its 11th floor to an open-air bar. You cross the hotel lobby to reach the lift; at the top, the terrace stretches out under a pergola hung with string lights, among columns, planters and lanterns, with rattan armchairs, marble-topped side tables and a few banquettes. A small bar counter, marked by a neon sign, opens onto the terrace.

Sunsets over the rooftops

From the parapet, the view passes over the roofs and domes of the neighbourhood to the towers of the centre and, on clear days, as far as the line of the Río de la Plata. The bar is designed for sunset; after dark, the terrace is lit by candles and string lights.

Cocktails, bites and sushi

The cocktail menu brings together the great classics, from the old fashioned to the pisco sour by way of the espresso martini, and a handful of house creations; champagnes, wines, beers and whiskies complete the selection. On the food side, hot and cold bites, such as empanadas, goat's cheese provoleta, bruschettas or a platter of local cold cuts and cheeses, sit alongside a selection of sushi and a few desserts.

Practical information

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 7pm to 11.30pm, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Advance booking on the hotel's website or on +54 11 4808 2100; tables are allocated for about two hours and a minimum spend per person is required. In bad weather, service moves to a covered lounge on the floor below. Smoking area. Paid valet parking. Subte: Facultad de Derecho or Las Heras stations (line H), about ten minutes' walk away.
