Gravity Bar: Dublin in 360° at the top of the Guinness Storehouse
The crown of the former vat house
West of the centre, in the Liberties, the St James's Gate brewery has been making Guinness since the 18th century. Its former fermentation building, a steel-framed structure from the early 20th century, now houses the Guinness Storehouse: a self-guided visit over seven levels, devoted to the ingredients, brewing and the history of the brand. The tour ends right at the top, at the Gravity Bar, a circular room of glass and steel set on the roof, designed to evoke the head of a pint.
Here, there is no terrace: the windows run all the way round the room. The eye plunges over the brick roofs of the Liberties and the brewery buildings, then takes in the whole city, from the Dublin Mountains to the south to Howth Head to the north-east.
A pint facing the city
The basic ticket, from €24 per adult when booked online, includes a Guinness or a Guinness 0.0 served at the bar. Other packages add a workshop to learn how to pour your own pint, a guided tour or a tasting, some of them for over-18s only. To eat, you have to go back down to the fifth level, where the restaurants are grouped together, including a brasserie serving oysters and Guinness beef stew.
