El Gato Negro: tapas under the retractable roof of King Street
A three-storey house on King Street
On King Street, an upmarket street in central Manchester lined with shops and old buildings, El Gato Negro occupies a restored three-storey townhouse. The ground floor combines a bar, a dining room and pavement tables; the first floor houses the main dining room and a chef's table facing the open kitchen. On the top floor, the roof terrace, protected by a retractable roof, lets you sit down to eat all year round above the bustle of the street, amid a chequerboard floor, a red banquette and a counter.
Tapas and sangria
The kitchen puts its own spin on Spanish tapas: fried calamari, gambas pil pil, octopus, meatballs, Catalan chorizo or seafood rice, and sharing dishes such as presa ibérica. As for drinks, cocktails cost £11 to £13, from the margarita to the negroni by way of house creations, and sangria can be ordered by the glass or by the jug, red, rosé or made with cava. The top floor, terrace included, can be hired for groups of up to 45 people seated or 100 standing.
Practical information
Open daily from noon, later on Fridays and Saturdays; check the opening hours before you go. Booking recommended, but the terrace tables cannot be booked in advance: they are allocated on the spot, depending on what is available at the time. Walk-ins are welcome. The St Peter's Square tram stop (Metrolink) is a few minutes' walk away.
