Chotto Matte: Nikkei cuisine and a terrace on the roof of St Michael's

Between Deansgate and Albert Square, the St Michael's development is home on its roof to Chotto Matte's first UK venue outside London. The brand champions Nikkei cuisine here, born from the meeting of Japanese techniques and Peruvian produce, in a vast space that combines a dining room, a lounge bar and a terrace. Protected by a retractable roof and glass walls, the terrace can be used in every season and opens onto a clear view of the city-centre buildings. Brightly coloured murals cover the walls.

Sushi, robata and Claude's Skyview Bar

Around the sushi counter and the robata grill, the menu moves from sushi to ceviches and grilled dishes. At the heart of the venue, Claude's Skyview Bar plays a Mexican tune: more than 200 tequilas and mezcals, cocktails from £12 to £14.50 and small plates to share, from tostadas and tacos to churros; the full restaurant menu is not served there. Resident DJs take over every weekend, and the mood shifts from a relaxed afternoon to a lively evening.

Practical information

The restaurant is closed on Mondays and opens on other days from noon, until late towards the end of the week. Claude's Skyview Bar is open from Thursday to Sunday, and whether it opens on weekdays depends on the weather: it is best to call before you go. Online booking recommended, with walk-ins welcomed when space allows. Claude's, with its retractable roof, can be hired for groups of up to 82 people seated or 100 standing. The entrance is on Jackson's Row; by taxi or private hire car, drop-off is on South Mill Street. The St Peter's Square tram stop is a few minutes' walk away.
